The purpose of your role as a general practitioner will be to provide high quality primary care service to the practice population and temporary residents as necessary. Such high standards will be achieved by working as part of a multidisciplinary team with other members of the practice and community teams.

Responsibilities:

•  Maintaining the highest clinical standards at all times and in accordance with accepted good medical practice

•  The post-holder will make him/herself available to undertake various duties as expected from a GP including surgery consultations, telephone (or other) consultations and queries, visiting patients at home, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion

•  Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other healthcare workers

•  Assessing the healthcare needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems

•  Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness

•  In consultation with patients and in line with evidence-based best clinical practice developing treatment and any associated care plans

•  Providing counselling and health education

•  Admitting or discharging patients to and from the caseload and referring to other care providers as appropriate

•  Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards

•  Championing the practice clinical governance programme for the provision of safe, high quality patient care

•  Working with the Practice Senior Management Team on clinical governance issues and clinical aspects of the service.

•  Collecting data for audit and clinical governance purposes

•  Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand-written prescriptions whenever possible)

•  Prescribing in accordance with local prescribing formulary (and generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate

•  Supporting the development of the education and research role of the practice as appropriate

•  Supporting other members of the practice clinical team providing clinical supervision as required

•  Ensuring that when referrals are made for patients to see other medical service providers, adequate information is given to the personnel to whom the patient has been referred for proper assessment to be made

•  Be supportive of any incident and complaints policies and procedures to ensure proper investigation and appropriate follow-up action

•  Maintaining patient confidentiality in line with professional standards

Other Responsibilities:

•  Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies/guidelines, e.g. prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety

•  A commitment to life-long learning and audit to ensure evidence-based best practice

•  Keeping up to date with advances in medicine and practices and supporting other medical and clinical staff to do the same

•  Contributing to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting within the practice/centre

•  Contributing to the development of computer-based patient records

•  Contributing to the summarising of patient records and Read-Coding patient data

•  Attending training and events organised by the practice/centre or other agencies, where appropriate

•  Review personal development plans and update as appropriate taking account of CPD requirements as related to appraisal and revalidation requirements

•  Working flexibly to support the development of the practice, initiating change and supporting others to adopt a positive approach to change and to work in new ways

•  Liaising with the Practice Manager to assist in the overall functioning and efficiency of the practice

•  Contributing to the growth of the practice and the implementation of new services

•  Supporting the image of the practice/centre and the wider organisation projecting a positive image for the practice at all times

•  Support the team to ensure that prescribing and medicines management is safe, effective and appropriate, conforming to:

–  NICE guidance and DH directives

–  Good Prescribing Practice as defined by British National Formulary (BNF) guidance from Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain on the safe and secure handling of medicines

–  Controlled Drugs legislation

–  Shared protocols agreed between the CCG, NHS England and other NHS providers

–  Locally specified Patient Group Directions

And that the team:

–  Has a generic prescribing rate in line with best practice

–  Has a system that ensures safe management and regular review for all patients receiving repeat prescriptions

Requirements – You must have practiced as a GP in your home country and be registered and licensed to practice. Able to succesfully complete PLAB 1 & PLAB 2 for registration with the GMC.
